FOR A REGIONAL TRANSPORT AND LOGISTICS SERVICES PROVIDER
Our client is one of the largest regional transport and logistics services provider with a fleet of 300+
prime movers and 400+ trailers comprising of semi, multi-axle, low loaders, step decks, bunkers and
It moves out of gauge project cargo through difficult terrain and remote destinations to its customers in the region (East, Central and Southern Africa). Its portfolio includes customers in extractive industries (mining, oil and gas), infrastructure (railways and airports), power and energy (transmission and power stations), humanitarian aid and agro-producers.
The client has invested in a Robust Transport Management System (TMS) that is integrated with GPS tracking to streamline its operations. The TMS allows it to plan, coordinate and Monitor its transport operations. It has also invested in and SAP ERP Solution to manage its Internal Operations.
While the Technical Solutions have been of great value to the business, Key processes and procedures such as registration of arrival and departure times of assets (Trucks and Trailers) assignment and creation of Maintenance Work orders and Assignment of Spares and Parts were done manually. Furthermore, there was limited integration between the Transport Management System (TMS) and the ERP System (SAP). Other specific gaps included;
1. Approval Processing – Heavy Paperwork in approval Processes and Procedures
2. Productivity- Productivity gaps due to delays and reactive reporting of asset management and maintenance processes
3. Operations Lag and Equipment Downtime – High risks business risks due to critical productive services downtime (due to reactive maintenance)
4. Compliance Gaps – Safety and compliance risks (due to sub optimal maintenance of Key production equipment
5. Costs – Cost Overruns such as lost business (due to idle/Faulty/Inefficient Equipment, Overtime claims, Overestimation of Maintenance, Procurement and Storage of Excess Parts etc.
Other Gaps Included; Misalignment of Reported KPI’s with reality on the ground and poor visibility of key operations metrics
We proposed and implemented a Maintenance Management Solution Code named AssetFix for the client. Key capabilities of the solution included;
Asset Management and Tracking
We tagged all key assets and parts with a custom built bar coding solution.
The solution included mobile application that is used by field workers to checking-in/Out assets (trailers and trucks as they move through key operational processes in the company yard. This automation of has helped the organization effectively measure its KPI’s and gain better Visibility of Its Operations.
We provided a preventive maintenance (Scheduled maintenance tool) to allow our client to plan and schedule maintenance actions for its assets. The tool can also be used to generate insightful management reports such as asset maintenance history and associated costs.
Parts and Inventory Management
We provided an inventory management tool that allows the client to have a real time view and snapshot of its inventory. This includes stock at its yard and status of each individual stock item Integration We integrated the solution to 2 key operational platforms; Transport Management System (TMS) and SAP Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP system. This integration allows for data exchange between the Maintenance Management System and the 2 platforms. The client now has full visibility on key operations metrics.
